The display of Regulus' confusion over his own actions, and mourning in the loss of his family hadn't caused feelings of guilt or sadness. Lucius certainly wasn't touched by the weak and cowardly boy. However a renewed determination to know the details of his own life before they could be inflicted upon him seized him. He and Narcissa danced about one another with barely polite words, and equally horrified and entranced by her presence he'd gone out of his way to fail avoiding her on several occasions. But he knew with anxious certainty each time that he would have to ask her eventually.

He wandered the Manor, looking from room to room until he was almost certain that she was away. Finally deciding to check the more communal rooms - which had seemed quite abandoned to him, and he doubted he would find her there - he was walking along the hallway as tendrils of music reached him, brief snippets of pieces he knew, a strange rhythm to them that guided his feet before he could think.

Lucius froze in the doorway as he reached it, looking across the Drawing Room to where she sat. It felt as though the Manor were trapped in the sort of horror book that called upon every cliche in the writer's grasp, yet still made him shudder with uncertainty.

He stood for a moment to watch her.

There is a lack of balance in the 'discussion' of abolishing the Statue of Secrecy. Whilst this integration committee sings the praises of the muggle community, the oh-so-charitable act of assisting muggles who would die without our help...I have seen no one point out the risks of this abolition.

I have used the term discussion lightly. I must wonder if there will be a referendum on the Statue, though it seems unlikely with the formation of this committee. Our Ministry appear to have discussed the matter first, as parents out of hearing of the children.

Draco,

I have found an old edition of the Prophet in the Drawing Room. It seems to suggest that muggles are being allowed into our world. It hints at a form of alliance. This surely cannot be true?

Narcissa's breathing slowed. He could feel her breath lightly on his shoulder, and her fingertips pressing against his side, seeking his presence in sleep. Lucius smiled to himself and looked down at his son, laying against his bare chest. Draco squirmed slightly in his sleep, his small feet pushing gently against Lucius' ribs.

Draco Malfoy had been in the world a matter of hours, and he had already taken over the Manor. Screaming his head off in the nursery Narcissa had spent months creating for him, Lucius had picked him up and brought him into their bedroom.

His son began to stir. Lucius raised his hand, offering his fingers to Draco which were promptly clung to.

Lucius put his head back against the pillow and looked up at the ceiling. He was a father now, and Draco was the heir to everything he intended on him having.

His eyes were closing as the Dark Mark began to irritate his arm.

He felt like he'd been hit over the head with something very heavy. Lucius turned onto his back, and looked up at a pale blue sky. Sky?

Lucius groaned, unable to force his brain into coherent thought. He closed his eyes again, trying to focus on his body. If he could at least make his body work, perhaps his mind would follow.

After a few moments his body felt a little better. His muscles responded to his enquiring movements, his toes curled when he pushed forward on them. He cold feel cold air against his chest.

He reflexively reached down to his trouser pockets, feeling for his wand. He needed to reach the Manor.

Lucius held his wand loose at his side, trying to clear the fog of his mind enough to focus on disapparating. With a deep breath he raised his wand. If he didn't manage to reach the Manor soon, splicing himself was potentially the least of his worries.

Gravel crunched beneath his hands, as he fell down in front of the gates. In some pain, and slightly uncomfortable at collapsing outside the Manor, at least it felt as though he'd arrived whole.

He gripped onto the gates and hauled himself to his feet. Why hadn't the gates opened?

"Let...me in," he said, breathless from the efforts of forcing out the words.

"Name..." the gate said ominously.

Lucius let go of the gate suddenly and almost fell down again. There was something strange going on with the wards, but it wouldn't be the first time his father had readjusted them. It was the first time he hadn't been immediately recognised however.

"Lucius Malfoy," he said after a moment, irritably.

As quickly as his stiff limbs would allow, he made his way along the drive, swearing as he was forced to side-step a peacock.

He reached the door, and thrust his wand against the handle. Nothing happened.

Lucius groaned in a somewhat whiny tone. What was happening? Why was everything so very much effort?

Having to swing his entire shoulder back, he knocked hard at the door.
